What PictureMatters is
PictureMatters is a free online image analysis tool at picturematters.in. You upload an image; it produces a structured report of what the file contains beyond the picture: EXIF camera data, GPS records, XMP and IPTC metadata, container structure, entropy profile, compression facts, cryptographic and perceptual hashes, and provenance signals such as AI generator markers and C2PA / Content Credentials presence.
The analysis engine is built in plain PHP for standard shared hosting — no database, no third-party processing, no image uploads to anyone else's cloud. Uploaded files are held temporarily and deleted automatically; the security page documents exactly how.
Why it exists
Two problems, one tool:
- People share files without knowing what's inside them. A photo can carry precise GPS. Most people have never seen their own EXIF. We make the invisible readable in one upload.
- The internet increasingly runs on images of uncertain origin. We can't promise pixel-level truth — nobody honestly can — but files carry real signals: generator markers, Content Credentials, re-encode traces, survival patterns. Surfaced together, and labeled honestly, those signals help people evaluate what they're looking at.

Our principles
- Honest signals over confident verdicts. Reports separate recorded facts from interpretation, state limitations plainly, and never claim to prove authenticity. This is a deliberate design choice — see the methodology and the disclaimer on every report.
- Privacy by architecture. No account, no gallery, no retention: originals are deleted right after analysis and reports expire automatically. It's not a policy promise layered over storage; it's how the tool is built.
- Accessibility and speed. No heavyweight frameworks, no account walls, readable typography, dark and light themes, and a tool that works on a five-year-old phone.
- Educational transparency. Every analysis layer is documented publicly, along with what it cannot do.
